There were years where I organized my entire life around pain β and didn't fully realize I was doing it.
It happened so slowly, so gradually, that the reorganizing became invisible to me. I stopped making plans I couldn't cancel. I learned which lighting felt safe, which smells to avoid, which days were likely to cost me. I carried medication the way other women carry lip balm β just always there, just in case, just part of being me.
And somewhere along the way, I stopped calling it suffering. I just called it my life.
You still smile at school pickup. You still show up for everyone who needs you to show up β because that's what you do, because you've always done it, because what is the alternative, really? You carry it. You carry it beautifully, invisibly, silently.
And underneath all of that, your body is trying to tell you something you're too busy β or too tired, or too afraid β to hear.
"I asked why constantly. Why me. Why this. Why won't it stop.
Neurologists did what they could β but no one could find the root of it. The only answer on the table was medication I wasn't willing to take.
There had to be something better."
For me, the shift happened during the year I was getting the Depo shots. I can feel it now when I look back β that year when my body began moving in the wrong direction, quietly at first and then unmistakably. Before then, the occasional headache or migraine β something I could manage, something that passed. But during that year they became relentless. More days living inside a migraine than not. That is a different kind of life.
I saw neurologists. I pushed for answers. No one could get to the root of it β not because they dismissed my pain, but because the standard path was focused more on management than deeper root-cause answers. The prescriptions they gave me had names I could barely pronounce, with side effect lists that gave me serious
pause. I wasn't willing to go down that road. There had to be something better than trading one kind of suffering for another.
So I kept asking. And the body kept escalating β because that's what happens when the deeper cause goes unaddressed. The whisper becomes something harder to ignore. And eventually, something you can no longer push through at all.
What I only understood much later is this: before the Depo shot ever entered the picture, my body had already been signalling that it was struggling. I had three pregnancies, and I was severely sick through all of them. At the time I thought nothing of it β that's just how some pregnancies go. But looking back through a different lens, I now see that as evidence.
Pregnancy places extraordinary demands on a woman's immune system, her neurological reserves, her nutritional stores. When the body is already carrying an underlying burden β viral, toxic, inflammatory β pregnancy can expose what was quietly compensating beneath the surface. The reserves were already running low. The system was already under strain. Pregnancy didn't necessarily create the problem. It revealed it.
Which means that by the time the Depo shot arrived, my body wasn't starting from zero. It was already depleted. Already compensating. The injection may well have been the weight that finally broke the balance β the straw that broke the camel's back in a body that had been quietly struggling long before anyone, including me, recognised it as struggling.
That reframing changed everything. Because it meant the question was never really about the Depo shot at all.
For most of my adult life, I accepted the story the medical system handed me β each symptom its own isolated event, unconnected to the others. No one was looking at the whole picture. And the questions I was bringing didn't fit the framework anyone was working from.
It was only later β much later, after years of reading and researching and slowly learning to ask different questions β that I began to wonder whether my body had actually been telling one story all along.
Not separate symptoms. Not random suffering. Not bad luck, or bad genes, or just the cost of being a woman in a demanding world.
A body under cumulative burden. A nervous system that had been running too hard for too long β compensating, and compensating, until one day it couldn't anymore.
"Triggers are not the same thing as root causes. That single realization changed the way I understood my entire history."
Migraines are rarely just migraines. Underneath the pain there can be layers β viral burden, neurological inflammation, toxic load, a hormonal system under chronic stress. What breaks you is rarely one thing. It is everything the body has been quietly asked to carry, for longer than anyone was paying attention.
And it left me with a question I wish more women were encouraged to ask β not from fear, not from blame, but from genuine curiosity:
What has the body been carrying? And what has it been trying to tell us, all this time?
I share this not because I have a clean ending β healing is rarely clean β but because I know what it feels like to go years without anyone reflecting your experience back to you. To silently normalize pain that is not normal. To function at a high level while something underneath is quietly unraveling. To feel, after some ordinary-seeming event or medication or season of stress, that something changed after that β and to not be able to name it, or prove it, or have it taken seriously.
You are not imagining it. The body keeps score of everything it has been asked to absorb. And sometimes the score has been running for far longer than we knew.
And sometimes the body was whispering long before it started screaming.
ο»ΏThere may be more hope than you realize
If any part of this resonated β the migraines, the exhaustion, the years of searching for answers β this is your reminder that symptoms can have a deeper story. I work with women to begin connecting those dots with more clarity and compassion.
Hereβs to vibrant health,
